BBC Radio Manchester's hour long programme covers real life stories and news reviews of topical items. Today we covered several headlines from student debt to celebrity endorsement, car parking fees at NHS hospitals to ninety-nine pence pregnancy testing kits!
So pretty diverse topics as you can see.... many taken from the Daily Mail. This link takes you to the headline news that the average students can now look forward to serious debt as they complete their courses. "Student debt stands at a record £22BN with the cost of studying at university for three years soaring above £33,000. Students are taking out bigger loans than ever to cover top-up tuition fees of £3,070 a year and rising living expenses.
They borrowed almost £4BN during the last financial year - up 32 per cent on the year before..."
My advice to the title topic was to consider career coaching before committing to tertiary education:
- Do you need to go to university/college to gain your qualifications this year? More mature students often study better...
- Can you attend a local establishment to reduce your living costs? Create a lifestyle spreadsheet for income/outgoings...
- Is sponsorship/scholarship an option? Check online and off-line...
The government "figures come just days after the Association of Graduate Recruiters warned that this summer's university-leavers face a longer job hunt as companies cut back on recruitment due to the credit crunch." says Laura Clark of the Daily Mail
Perhaps work and life experience would be better options for future school leavers for the next couple of years at least...
