19.00: Alistair Macdonald - Have I Got News For You!
TV, radio, newspapers and the Internet are just crying out for good stories. But none of these news outlets care if you are a professional speaker unless you have a good story to tell.

There are thousands of hours of airtime to fill each week and acres of column inches but hard-pressed journalists find it difficult to meet the demands of 24-hour news. This is a great opportunity to put your name in lights…….but you need to know how.

Award-winning former BBC TV reporter/producer Alistair Macdonald and founder member of the PSA NW, will provide some inside track tips on how you can make the most of the media.
             ■  What is news?
             ■  What stories make the headlines?
             ■  What real skills do you have in your filing cabinet?
             ■  How do you tap into free editorial space?
             ■  How do you become an ‘expert’ in your field?

All this and much more will be revealed as Alistair unveils the secrets of how you can become a great storyteller and a media pundit.

Alistair is unashamedly a ‘poacher turned gamekeeper’. Since he left TV, he has trained directors and senior managers from more than 20 countries and from five continents. His company, amtv, specialises in media training, crisis news management, presentation skills, networking training and corporate DVDs. Alistair is an amusing storyteller who has enthralled audiences up to 1,000-strong. He’s a member of the Professional Speakers’ Association and his passion is mountains and exploration. He’s taken tea with Tuareg tribesmen in Mali, tangled with Tibetan bandits in Nepal, swum in piranha-infested swamps up the Amazon and suffered frostbite on Mt Everest where he climbed to over 23,000ft. You can find out more about Alistair’s business at http://www.amtvmedia.co.uk

19.50: Q & A with Geoff
20.05: Comfort break, networking and tea, coffee and biscuits
20.20:  James Rae – A singer songwriter from Merseyside, James recently returned to writing and performing his own songs again after almost 20 years.
His passion for communicating through music and performance is inspiring and gives an insight into the challenges and rewards of rediscovering something within ourselves that perhaps we may have lost in the day to day business of earning a living, supporting a family and being ‘a grown up’.
James had a brief taste of success in the 80s with a band he formed at school who went on to tour with headlining acts such as Joe Jackson and OMD before signing major recording and publishing contracts with RCA Records and EMI Music Publishing. When the band split after 3 singles failed to set the charts on fire, James turned his back on the music industry and spent the next 15 years or so in 'proper jobs' and raising a family.
Despite all the good things this brought, he always felt there was something missing from his life and finally discovered it on a life-changing songwriting retreat in Ireland in September 2004.
This creative re-awakening led to him releasing a critically acclaimed solo CD in 2009 and embarking on an emotionally rewarding second career as a live performer – this time whilst managing to hold on to the day job! James describes the highs and lows of having to re-launch his musical alter ego as a forty-something father of two, the challenges of becoming his own PR man and some of the unexpected spin-offs that have resulted on both a personal and business level. www.jimmyrae.co.uk

Chris Davidson and I were discussing the merits and de-merits of microphones. My debate centred around getting the best sound quality from a conference recording.
Chris - an expert in such matters succintly put it this way:

1) You get mic'd up with a 'lapel' mic + transmitter and it's connected to the receiver, which is connected to the mixing desk, which is connected to the loudspeakers scattered throughout the room.

2) So far, so good.

3) You're being video'd - great.

4) Question - how does video chap get his/her sound?

5) Does it come from
  • (a) general background,
  • (b) a shotgun mic on stage,
  • (c) a shotgun mic pointed at a speaker, or....

6)....preferred solution of a second lapel mic + transmitter that you're wearing which transmits to receiver attached to video camera.

So many videos are sadly scrapped because of poor sound quality.

Thought his advice was worth sharing.
